RandTel
RandTel phones are easy to use. No coins are ever required, as all calls are FREE. Any coins inserted into the phones will be automatically returned.
To use the phone, follow these steps:
1. Lift receiver.
2. Listen for dial tone.
3. Dial number.
That's all there is to it. Simple, right? Well, yes, that's the idea. To aid in this simplicity, we've included a few features for your convenience:
- Seven-digit dialing inside VT - Due to an FCC mandate, everyone must dial the area code before the number even when making a local call.
RandTel phones used to allow 7-digit dialing to any VT number, but there were issues when users would dial the area code first. All calls, local or long distance, now require you to dial the area code + number.
- N11 codes allowed:
- 911 - EMERGENCY - The phone's installation address is registered with the service provider, so emergency services will know your location automatically if you have to call 911 from a RandTel phone.
- 811 - DigSafe
- 411 - Directory Assistance
- 211 - United Way
- Suicide Prevention Hotline - dial 988.
- Operator services - dialing 0 will connect you with a RandTel operator. They can assist with dialing, transfer calls, or provide information. When in doubt, dial 0!
- 3-way calling - In the rare occasion you need to initiate a 3-way call, do so with a technique called 'hook flash'. Dial the first number, then once the first person picks up,
quickly tap the hook switch (the silver lever the handset rests on when you hang up). You should get a dial tone. Then, dial the number of the 2nd person you want
to join the call. Once they pick up, hook flash again to bring in the first caller. Presto! A 3 way call from a payphone.
