This is a minor modification to an existing phone at the Putney Community Center on Christian Square.
The original phone was a 1D1 rotary single slot model, made by Western Electric. What's interesting is that the phone retains its original NYNEX branding, placing it after 1984 but before 1997 when NYNEX merged with Bell Atlantic. Payphones would've been rebranded after the year 2000 when the company purchased General Telephone (GTE) and became Verizon. In Vermont, Verizon sold its landlines (including payphones) to FairPoint Communications in 2008. FairPoint then sold its payphone operations off to Pacific Telemanagement Services (PTS) in 2012, marking the end of the era of telephone company-controlled payphones in Vermont. This phone must not have been in operation for very long, as it evaded four operating companies' branding and was abandoned in place. Luckily for us, the phone wiring was still exposed, so it provided a convenient place to tap in and provide dial tone once again!
A service record card was found inside the phone after unlocking it, showing the original installation date of October 20th, 1985. Neat!
The upper housing was swapped out for a touch tone variant to provide better functionality, as many organizations' phone menus require the use of the star or pound keys to correctly navigate.
